AMERICAN RELIEF COALITION FOR SYRIA CELEBRATES RESETTLEMENT OF 10,000 SYRIAN REFUGEES IN THE UNITED STATES
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The White House announced today that the United States has met its goal of resettling 10,000 Syrian refugees this year.
Suzanne Akhras Sahloul, Executive Director of the Syrian Community Network, which is part of the American Relief Coalition for Syria (ARCS), released the following statement in response:
“We are very proud that the United States opened its doors to 10,000 of our friends and family fleeing war and unthinkable devastation. These first 10,000 refugees need much more assistance and opportunities to rebuild their lives in our country.”
“Approximately 5 million Syrians have fled the civil war since 2011,” Sahloul continued. “They are left in limbo, alive but with no life in camps outside their homeland and unable to build for the future. Millions of Syrian children are trapped without education or a future they can visualize.”
Sahloul further noted, “We urge the United States to keep our doors open and for states to welcome refugees into our communities. Syrian refugees have a dream to rebuild their lives. Let us stand together to help make that possible.”
Together, the organizations in ARCS have raised more than $51 million in direct humanitarian aid for Syria. Member organizations are responsible for 119 schools and 145 hospitals staying open and providing services for Syrians in and outside the country.
